Watch any movie (Gosford Park, Howard’s End, The Remains of the Day) filmed against the backdrop of an 19th century English estate and you’ll find one of these elegant and versatile serving trays lurking in almost every scene.
Our tray, measuring 20”x26” and made of solid mahogany, can be used as an impromptu bar when entertaining; as a bedside or entry table, kitchen stand, or office table. Its handsome lines look good in any room, be it traditional or modern.
The tray surface is constructed as a frame with multiple panels; a form of construction that makes it stronger and also prevents warping or cracking. The gallery, with cut-out hand-holds, is topped with a double bead and is joined at the corners with mitered through-dovetails. The crossed scissor legs are turned on the lathe, then joined into 2 intersecting frames that open to support the tray. When closed, the frames fold together neatly for easy storage. Historically, only the very best of these trays had such fine details.
This is a beautiful piece, full of small challenges for the woodworker, that will draw admiring comments from your family and guests to your home for years to come.
