Part Two of a Two Part Course
9:00- 4:00
The best made cabinets always have carefully fitted doors and drawers that swing and glide smoothly. The door and drawer for this cabinet are not built to simply fit over the opening(s), hiding gaps and flaws (a common technique often practiced by low-end shops looking to cut corners). In this workshop, the door and drawer are inset and carefully fitted for a crisp and attractive traditional appearance.
Students will begin by building a beaded frame-and-panel door, using a technique developed by Mario for a Fine Woodworking magazine article, titled: Quick but Sturdy Cabinet Door. It’s a great technique, yielding a beautiful door that doesn’t require the purchase of expensive matched router bits; all the work is done on the table saw with a combination blade. Later, a delicate bead-and-quirk molding is mitered (using an ingenious shop-made jig) and fitted around the panel to give the door a traditional appearance. Then students will carefully plane the completed door to the frame opening with a consistent reveal, and hang it with traditional mortised butt hinges.
The drawer (made of solid wood with a plywood bottom) for this cabinet is constructed with an integral drawer front, for a cleaner looking box that features handsome machine-cut dovetails. Then the shop-made wood drawer guides are carefully planed to allow easy travel of the drawer box into the cabinet.
The techniques learned and the skills acquired during this weekend will prepare a woodworker to easily build great looking, quality cabinetry and fixtures.
