Build a Hearth Bench Woodworking Course

Build A Hearth Bench
Instructor: Alan Turner
9:00-4:00pm (day)
Class Size: 12 maximum

In this two-day course students build a hearth bench.  It’s perfect as a bench for sitting in front of a fire or for use as an occasional table.

Clean, minimalist lines give rise to a simple and attractive bench.  By splaying the legs with compound angled tenon shoulders, the visual volume of the piece is kept small while ensuring a stable perch. Wedged tenon joinery completes the bench with a traditional detail.

The contemporary flavor of the design lets the maker explore wood grain without the distraction of complex joinery and a busy array of supporting members.  The slab seat is butternut, chosen for its subtle grain, gorgeous color, and easy workability; the legs are straight-grained 8/4 walnut, a perfect combination.  This is an excellent first piece of furniture for the novice or beginning woodworker.

Recommended prerequisite: Woodworking Machinery Basics or experience with the table saw.

Tuition: $450, including materials.

In order to register, please call us at 215-849-5174, or drop us an email and we will forward the registration materials.
