Shaped Bench Arm Course

Without a doubt, the most challenging part of building this bench is the arm. The joinery of the arm into the back post is an angled mortise and tenon joint; this will be cut by hand to the extent necessary.

The arm is a serpentine shape terminating in a knuckled front with an abbreviated volute. The curves are faired both by machine and by hand as required. The inner part of the arm is relieved for comfort and water drainage.

Using a number of different hand tools, the front of the arm is shaped round following the 5:7 method which divides the blank proportionally along any curve.  In practice, this is not as difficult as a written instruction might first appear.  We'll teach you how it is done.
