Lesley,
The Philadelphia hardware store is Killian's on Germantown Ave. I recently came across another store in Collingswood, NJ on Haddon Ave.

Hi Lesley,
Yes, everyone did a fine job. Working at her typical whirlwind speed, Doreen managed to surprise us again. Don't worry about the Jefferson Lap Desk. Alan and I both think you're ready for that class and will do just fine.

Love this post! There were two small hardwares stores in Brooklyn that I went to when I needed something, or when I just felt like perusing. One was in the heart of Williamsburg, 10th and Bedford. The guys there were always willing to help and super friendly! The hardware store that was closer to my apt in polish Greenpoint area, the men didn't speak a word of English so we would use an online translator for "nails" or whatever else we needed. What is the hardware store in Philadelphia that you mentioned?

Wow everyone did such an awesome job! I can't wait to take the lap desk class, even as hugely intimidating it seems.

How did Doreen manage to finish two mirrors?!

Hi Brian,
Yes, of course. The desk, although small, is enchanting. Once you see it, open the writing panels, unlock the drawer, you'll want to build one. I look forward to giving you "the tour". See you on Saturday. Mario

Hi Rick,
That's what I've tried to do. I've already made several small changes that not only improve the construction, but make using the desk easier- without changing the it's appearance. Subsequent blog postings will reveal more construction details.
Please stop by to see the desk next time you're in Phila. Mario

I think this project relates to peoples' association with Jefferson as being the father of all things innovative and practical - similar to Ben Franklin. As a result, I think folks are willing to overlook the execution part of building this innovative desk IDEA. The best of both worlds? Build Jefferson's IDEA with better construction execution.
