Hepplewhite Butler’s Chest
Instructor: Alan Turner
Six weekends over six months,
with homework
Starting January 23, 2010
This Butler’s Chest, designed by Alan Turner in the style of George Hepplewhite, is not patterned after an existing chest. The compact size is more attractive and delicate than the customary 40” by 40” of many similar antique examples, making the project easier and more manageable. Built of beautiful mahogany, it incorporates many desirable, yet historically correct features, such as:
- An elegant and curvaceous lower rail with splayed feet.
- Full size dovetailed drawers with traditional cockbeading.
- A drop with a fitted gallery, designed to accommodate a laptop.
- A solid wood dovetailed carcase.
- Solid wood ship-lapped back boards.
- Beautiful period-appropriate hardware.
The case, drawers and fitted gallery all contain hand-cut dovetails. PFW recommends proficiency in dovetail work, or its Hand Cut Dovetails course.
37-1/2 high by 34-1/4” wide by 20-1/8" deep
