Planecraft doesn’t end with bench planes, block planes, and shoulder planes. Here is a quick, one-night primer on specialty planes. Beyond the everyday planes we often use there is an array of specialty planes like: the Stanley No. 39 dado planes, side rabbet planes, No. 45 and/or No. 55 combination planes, the No. 71 Router plane, the No. 66 universal hand beader, the miter plane, and specialty scrapers. These special tools aren’t frequently used, but can be indispensible in certain situations.
Familiarity with these unusual tools will increase your general level of comfort with hand tools, improve your sharpening skills, and broaden your use of hand planes.
