Chisels are used every day, all day long, when making fine furniture. However, to be of any use, a chisel needs to be the correct one for the job, properly conditioned, and razor sharp.
After learning about the different types of chisels and their uses, students will prepare and condition their chisels for precise work. Then they’ll practice sharpening techniques in order to obtain a razor-like edge in just minutes.
When ready, students will learn to carefully manipulate their chisels for precise results when fitting hinges, paring dovetails and tenons, roughing out dados, and cutting mortises. A chisel seems a simple tool, but in this short course we will explore its more subtle features.
