The technique of delicately burning veneers to create the effect of shading was a common practice in the Federal period. Learn this interesting technique while making the classic shaded fan inlay, a common decorative device used on Federal period furniture.
After carefully selecting veneer, cutting, and shading the fan segments, students will assemble the fan, and then surround the completed design with a 2-part string banding. The subject of this workshop appeared in a Master Class feature in Fine Woodworking magazine.
