There are literally hundreds of shop-made jigs that are used to expand the usefulness and efficiency of common woodworking machines. They allow us to execute accurate tapers, cut multiple parts, shape and hollow furniture parts, cut tenons, and many other functions.
In this workshop, students will learn about, examine, and try out some of the most ingenious and useful machine jigs. The class covers jig design, material selection, and hardware sources.
Learn how to design and use jigs using products such as DeStaco clamps, threaded inserts, Tee-nuts and propel nuts, how to tap wood for the use of common machine screws, the utility of Ultra High Molecular Weight plastic, CA glue, the cam or eccentric holder, leather, Baltic birch plywood, flat ground stock in steel and aluminum, and other tricks of the jig-making trade. This course is designed to wean one from the addiction of buying mail order jigs and fixtures that are expensive, seldom used, and often of marginal quality.
Students are encouraged to bring their camera and sketchbook to take notes, record measurements, and photograph details.
Course fee (including materials fee and lunch) $165
