When woodworkers first start to build furniture they usually follow plans that provide most of the necessary information to complete a project; there are no decisions to make - or choices! However, at some point, most woodworkers would like to build a design of their own. In this 2-day workshop, we focus on case pieces (cabinets, wall units, and chests) and tables; covering many diverse topics; all essential to the successful design and construction of furniture. We will start with an introduction to effective sketching for furnituremakers. Students are encouraged to ask questions, pose hypothetical situations, and relate real-life problems throughout the workshop. This informal format allows PFW to present a trove of invaluable information to students. PFW will also provide a variety of studio models, sample joinery, trial parts and pieces, shop-made jigs, and shop plans, as well as, fully completed furniture pieces for inspection. If you’re ready to take the leap to designing and building original furniture, then this weekend workshop should be your first step. Here are just some of the topics to be covered: ● Understanding and planning for wood movement ● Choosing your wood: What’s the best wood for your project ● Designing along the grain; How to enhance your designs by utilizing grain patterns ● Basic carcase design and construction: How to build attractive, strong, and economical cabinets ● Selecting and installing hardware ● Designing, building, and fitting drawers Tuition: $320, including materials.
