Blanket Chest Woodworking CourseDovetail Blanket Chest Class

New Hope Blanket Chest
Instructor - Mario Rodriguez
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Class Size - 12 Max.

In prior times, blanket chests were the repositories of special items: books, quilts, clothing, and bedding.  They kept everyday items safe and dry, but accessible. Chests like this were the earliest and simplest form of furniture. Today, they are still used to store and protect precious family heirlooms. Join us this summer to build your own special chest.

Our blanket box is made of choice butternut (white walnut); known for its creamy color and rich, vigorous grain patterns.

We thought butternut would be the perfect wood for (the) very visible through dovetails. It cuts and pares easily (using hand tools); with the tails yielding nicely to the pins during assembly, producing a tight and attractive joint.

The 2-board top, carefully fitted with breadboard ends, is attached to the chest with hand-forged strap hinges that add an attractive period touch, while providing additional strength to the lid. The base is decorated with a lively scrolled front that raises the box off the floor and provides a nice counterpoint to the straight lines of the chest itself.

This chest features 16” of through dovetails at each corner, not counting the 4” high base, making it a real dovetail tour-de-force.

Note: The dovetail workshop is a strongly recommended prerequisite for this course.

Cost: $1150, plus hardware.
