Carve a Ball-and-Claw Foot
Instructor: Mario Rodriguez
9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (day)
Maximum Class Size: Approximately 12
Not everyone gets the chance to build a full-blown Chippendale armchair. But carving a ball-and-claw foot is still considered by many to be an essential woodworking experience.
Woodcarving is a process where you remove wood. But if you take off too much, it's gone forever. In this workshop we take a slightly different approach to creating this 3 dimensional piece. Our students start by modeling a ball-and-claw foot using clay. By "building" a foot with clay, you have the opportunity to correct mistakes while becoming familiar with the form. That way the transition to wood is much easier - and more successful.
The first day is spent studying the ball-and-claw foot, examining regional variations, and creating a clay model. On the second day students learn to sharpen carving tools, rough cut a foot blank on the band saw, then with the clay model before them, carve an energetic and life-like version in choice mahogany.
