Cherry Bedside Table - week 3

Cherry Bedside Table

Making a solid wood bedside table

Instructor - Craig Vandall Stevens

  • April 17 - May 22, 2018  9:30 am - 12:30 pm (6 weekday mornings)

The cherry bedside table is an ideal project for learning and improving hand-tool and joinery skills. The project offers numerous challenges while creating a beautiful and very achievable piece of hand-made furniture. Through discussions and hands on work, students will make a small table with splayed, tapered legs using traditional techniques and joinery methods.

Students will learn mortise & tenon joinery, the careful selection of wood, work with slightly angled joints, milling and working with solid wood, bandsawing the leg tapers and then refining the legs with a hand plane, edge-gluing boards to create the top and applying an oil finish.

There will be ongoing discussions on sharpening and using bench tools as well as machine setup and use. Hands-on assistance focused on improving participant’s woodworking skills will be combined with daily demonstrations and lectures. The fundamental techniques learned in this project can be applied to many future furniture pieces.
