Instructor: Craig Vandall Stevens

  • September 22 - 23 and October 6 - 7, 2018  9 am - 4 pm (2 weekends)

Making and fitting beautiful, hand-cut dovetailed drawers is one of the hallmarks of highly refined craftsmanship. This workshop focuses on the fine points of creating carefully made drawers that “whisper” open and close.
Practicing methods of work that encourage consistency and quality, each participant makes a solid-wood drawer to fit an existing case using classic hand-cut dovetail construction. Craig covers pertinent topics such as case preparation, wood selection, milling, layout, sharpening and use of chisels, saws, planes, and other hand tools.

The course is spread out over 2 weekends. The first weekend focuses on both through and half-blind dovetail joinery, cut by hand using Japanese or western handsaws.

The second weekend allows students to put their new dovetail skills into practice by cutting the joinery, gluing up, creating a bottom panel and fitting their drawer into a sample drawer pocket. Participant go home with a competed drawer and the experience of going through the complete process.
